Nepal has existed as a nation for at least 8000 years. The Nepal Mahatmya of Skanda Puran, a vedic chronicle, amply speaks about Nepal as a nation in "Jambu Dweep". According to this Puran, Nepal had already received the status of a major nation.
The modality of Nepalese governance then is not known, but, it can be surmised from the stories that the nation had some form of elective monarchy or probably a republic.
Nepal has been considered a holy place because of its association with Shiva, the lord of hindu gods.
In medieval times, Nepal was considered to be extended across Assam in the east to Punjab in the west. However, there are no concrete documentary evidence of this.
